Such an amazing piece of Victorian history!
Antique Victorian mourning ring assayed (hallmarked) in Birmingham, England in 1868. 18k yellow gold, colored enamel, pearls, and a diamond. Made by Astor and Son. The United Kingdom was notorious for hallmarking all precious metal jewelry from the year 1327 onwards.
Measurements: US size 5.75. Weighs 3.77 grams.
The inside of the hoop is engraved with the name and dates of the departed: M. Stark died in 1869. The top opens to reveal woven hair which we must assume belonged to M. Stark. The hallmarks inside the hoop are as follows: A&S in a rectangle. This is the maker, believed to be Aston & Son, who registered in Birmingham in June of 1857; a Crown that signifies Gold; 18 for 18k gold purity; anchor for Birmingham and date letter T for 1868.
